Samuel Colt
1814 - 1862
This site will explain the history of Samuel Colt, the Colt Navy Revolver and what made this a key role in western civilization and how it influenced modern firearms to come.
Samuel Colt was born in Hartford, Connecticut, On July 19th, 1814. His father was Christopher Colt, a farmer who had moved his family to Hatford. Samuel's maternal grandfather was an officer in the civil war, this is most likely the reason for one of his earliest possessions being his grandfather's flintlock pistol. Colt had thought of the idea for the revolver while on the Corvo, sailing for Calcutta. He learnt that whenever the ship's wheel was spun, each spoke would align itself with a clutch that would hold it in place. While he was on the Corvo, Colt had a made a wooden model of a pepperbox revolver from wood he had found onboard. This version of pepperbox revolvers was different from other models of its time because the shooter could rotate the cylinders by cocking a hammer and pawl that would lock the cylinders in place.
